How it works

A measuring system
for a complementary
wellness assessment.

The Meridian Scan — also described as an electromeridian scan or body energy diagnostic — records electrical measurements at selected points on the hands and feet and processes them into an energy-pattern report, intended to support a broader wellness discussion.

Illustration of the energy pathways and measuring points mapped across the human body

Meridian Diagnosis, as the method is known, rests on the energy flow in the organ energy tracks described by Ayurveda. There are 72 tracks in the body, and twelve of these form the fundamental ones — the main organ tracks, which exist on the left and on the right, twenty-four in total. When there are no disruptions, energy flows through them unhindered and the person is healthy. If there is stagnation, symptoms of illness will eventually arise.

These are traditional concepts rather than anatomical ones. The system reads energy patterns described within that framework; it does not detect, diagnose or predict disease, and the report should not be presented as a substitute for clinically validated diagnostic testing.

Within this framework each track is associated with a set of organs, tissues and functions, so a reading on one track is interpreted alongside all of them. Which associations apply, and how strongly, differs from person to person — which is why the report is written individually.

A computerised wellness-assessment system that brings traditional Chinese and Indian frameworks together with modern computer measurement.

The approach draws together long-standing traditional knowledge of energy and its flow with computer measurement, alongside acupuncture, homeopathy, orthomolecular medicine and Ayurveda. The assessment is non-invasive and designed to be comfortable. It is offered for ages 10 to 80, subject to the stated eligibility criteria.

Meridians & Qi

The channels energy
travels through.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy called Qi circulates in the body along specific, interconnected tracks: the meridians.

When that flow stagnates, is blocked, or diverts somewhere else, there is an interruption — and interruptions cause emotional and physical problems. To rectify the flow, specific acupuncture points on the meridians are stimulated with needles, with pressure, or by other techniques.

What is actually established?

The World Health Organization has published Standard Acupuncture Nomenclature, which sets out standard names and locations for acupuncture points and meridians. That is a naming standard, and not a finding about what meridians are or a validation of any device.

Whether meridians correspond to any anatomical structure remains a subject of research and debate, and no consensus exists. We set the tradition out here because it is the framework the reading is interpreted within — not as scientific evidence that the assessment can diagnose anything.

The twelve organ tracks

Twelve channels,
and a clock they keep.

Of the seventy-two tracks, twelve are fundamental. Each is tied to an organ, an element and a feeling — and each has two hours of the day when it runs strongest. Pick one to follow it.

A simplified map — every track runs on both sides of the body.

Everything is connected to everything

One meridian,
many consequences.

Each of the 24 main meridians is linked to an organ, an emotion, a vertebra, a tooth or molar, a chakra, part of the kinetic system, and parts of the nervous, cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. Stagnation in one has consequences for all of them.

The liver track

One example of the six things a single meridian is wired to. A disturbance here can surface as any of them — which is why treating the symptom alone rarely settles it.

  • OrganThe liver itself
  • TeethThe canine teeth
  • EmotionAnger and frustration
  • FunctionProtein metabolism
  • ChakraThe crown chakra
  • KineticsParts of the knees and eyes

Excess and deficiency

Every track shows on screen as a swell (excess) or a dip (deficiency), and each has its own signature. The gall bladder track can produce feelings of bitterness: an excess gives feelings of guilt, a deficiency stimulates anger. Its positive characteristic is the capacity to be deeply and seriously thoughtful.

The foundations

Where the map
comes from.

Two traditions sit under the reading: the chakras, which feed the organ tracks, and Ayurveda, which describes the constitution each of us is born with.

Chakras

Chakras are the centres of energy in human beings — the connections between the several levels on which a person manifests: spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. They are the junctions where energy canals meet, and they receive, transform and disperse energy.

The word chakra means wheel, or disc. Energy is drawn in and delivered to the body as the chakra turns. At the physical level they correspond with the nerve intersections of the endocrine glands, and all of them are connected by the main energy canal that coils up the spinal column to the crown.

Every chakra corresponds with a particular organ energy track and provides it with energy — which is why the chakras are one of the fifteen diagnostic spectra.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda means “knowledge of the living”. Its core idea is that sickness arises first in the spirit and then, if ignored, manifests itself in the body — with certain genetic illnesses as the exception.

Everything is built on the union of five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. These form the basis of three vitalities, the tridosha, present in DNA, in the nervous system, in the emotions, in the seasons and in the cosmic energy of stars.

  • Vata

Regulates impulse, movement and change. Noticeable in nerve impairment and hyperventilation, and in dry autumn winds. Its blockages correlate with fear.

  • Pitta

Ensures fiery enthusiasm. Noticeable in metabolism, passion, hot-headedness — and in volcanoes.

  • Kapha

Provides structure and firmness. Noticeable in resignation, possessiveness and depression — and on dark, cloudy days.

The writings of Ayurveda are ancient, and influenced other traditional systems across Asia. In India it is a recognised system of medicine with its own regulated qualifications and institutions. That recognition applies to Ayurveda as a tradition; it is not a validation of this assessment or of any claim made for it.

The screening cycle

Five steps,
start to finish.

The same loop every time — which is what makes one reading comparable with the next, and progress something you can actually see.

  1. 01

    Sensor points

Readings taken at the endpoints of the main organ tracks, on the fingers and toes.

  2. 02

    Measurements sent

Data captured by the instrument and passed to the computer for processing.

  3. 03

    Analysis

Readings compared against the system’s reference bands for your age and sex.

  4. 04

    Wellness report

Every organ track, the chakras and the five elements, set out in writing within one to three days.

  5. 05

    Guidance

Pressure points, exercises, diet and lifestyle — and a referral to a healthcare professional where appropriate.

The measurement

What the instrument
actually does.

A band is placed around the wrist to establish the connection between client and system. Readings for this energy health diagnostic are then taken at the beginning and end points of each track. The technical figures below are the manufacturer’s stated specifications for the device.

350readings per point, within 16 milliseconds
0.6 µAmeasuring current — too small to influence a cell
0.25%error rate stated by the manufacturer
Age & sexreference bands, per the manufacturer

Small enough to change nothing

The electrical load on the skin is very small. The manufacturer states that probe pressure is held constant at 10 grams and the measuring current is 0.6 microamps, which is far below the level at which sensation occurs.

The device operates over a range from 20 kOhm to 60,000 kOhm. How long a reading takes depends on your natural skin resistance: 12 ms at 1,000 kOhm, 150 ms at 20,000 kOhm.

No electrosmog of its own

The apparatus runs on a 1.2 volt battery, so it surrounds you with no electromagnetic field. It talks to the computer over infra-red, so there is no electrical influence from the computer system either.

All readings are processed by the computer and turned into graphs. On screen you can see which tracks read within the system’s reference band and which read above or below it.

Research

Why the reading
has to be fast.

Skin-resistance measurement only tells you about the energy track if it is taken before the point can react to being measured. That distinction — between BP and GSR — is the whole basis of reliability.

~50 msBefore Polarization — the state of the point itself > 400 msGalvanic Skin Response — the point reacting to being measured

Measure too slowly and the reading reflects the point reacting to being measured. Taking the reading Before Polarization is what makes the measurement reproducible. Nothing is measured directly from an organ: the reading is taken at the skin and interpreted within the system’s methodology.

Conditions for a reliable reading

  • Pressure on the point is low (0.49 Newton), short and constant.
  • Amperage is very low — 0.227 µA at a skin resistance of 22,000 kOhm.
  • Measurement lasts no longer than 400 ms.
  • No water or conductive cream on the point, and no strong electromagnetic fields nearby.

Twenty-four hours of readings

The manufacturer reports readings taken every twenty minutes over a full day, alongside heart-rate variability and cortisol, in which skin resistance rose during sleep. Within this methodology, high skin resistance corresponds to a low track value and low resistance to a high one. This is cited as the manufacturer’s account, not as independently verified evidence.

The autonomic nervous system

The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary functions — breathing, metabolism, cardiovascular function, digestion and others. Skin conductance is known to vary with autonomic activity, which is the physiological basis the measurement rests on. The further association traditional accounts draw between the autonomic plexuses and the chakras is a traditional interpretation, not an established anatomical finding.

Research into acupuncture and skin-resistance measurement continues at a number of institutions, and the manufacturer cites some of it in its literature. We have not independently verified those citations, and none of them establishes that this assessment can diagnose, detect or predict any medical condition.
